Train ride home

 So far I have survived going from Washington DC  to Chicago  on the Amtrak Cardinal  line. Now I'm  on the Empire  Builder from Chicago  to Spokane. Both trains I  have traveled  coach which has it's  own challenges. The seats are comfortable with lots of leg room and they recline alot. I have had someone sitting next to me some of the time. The Cardinal  train my car was 2 back from the engine and they blew the damn horn  all night. It sounded like it was right out my window. The Empire Builder I'm  in one of the last cars and I  can't  even hear the horn. Now the problem  is crying children. It's  like they feed off each other one finally stops and another starts. Allen Hubbell  supplied me with a Panera breakfast  sandwich  in Lafayette, IN  on Saturday  morning. Dennis Pedrick  and Jamie supplied me with beer, burrito, candy bars, chips, chocolate  chip banana bread, beer nuts, and breakfast  cereal in LaCrosse,  Wisconsin on Saturday  night. I'm set with food. It's  midnight going  to try to get some sleep.

    Wow...Who knew Train rides would be so...eventful ? Thank goodness you have your human gas tank, or at least your backpack, stashed with goodies 😃

 After riding 3650 miles, climbed 116,886 vertical  feet, and went from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. It is with heavy heart that this is my last post for my bicycle  ride across America. I had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful interesting people along the way. Big and little acts of kindness that lifted my spirits. Kim and his wife that offered  me shelter and food on a rainy  day in Port Angeles. The closed bicycle  shop in Okanagan, Wa that opened  on a Saturday  morning  to replace my seat post. The Lutheran church in Havillah, Wa that provided  me shelter and food. The people at the top of Boulder Pass  that give me water when I needed it. Rodney in Lolo, Mt that shared his apple crisp. The family  that gave me and my  bicycle  a ride to Gillette, wy when my rear wheel failed. Day 39 Muncie, IN to Dayton, OH

 Day 39 Muncie,IN to Dayton, OH 94 miles. I woke up to a heavy overcast. I left the comfort  of the motel about 8:30 with a little chill in the air. The winds were quite heavy all day. At least it was either a cross or a tail wind for the most part. I rode on the Cardinal Greenway trail  for a lot of the day. It's  the longest trail in Indiana. It must  look amazing  in the fall with all the leaves changing colors. I was in Amish  country a good part of the day. No buggies on the bike trail. I thought the church looked cool, it could use a little TLC. It was built in 1903. Google maps for bicycles keeps me  on great secondary  roads and bicycle  trails. My Warmshower  hosts Heath and Joyce in Dayton are great. They fed me and gave me a couch to sleep on. I even became buddies with their dog Josie.

Day 50 Harbeson, De to Rehoboth Beach, De

 Day 50 Harbeson, De to Rehoboth Beach, De 17 miles. My morning started out with a great breakfast from my Warmshower  host Brad. His wife Ann wanted to lead me on the trails to Rehoboth Beach. She was good  company along the ride. A lot of people  on the trail greeted her by name.  Ann pointed out the back yard of skeletons . It reminded  me of a similar  scene  in Gillette, Wy. She broke off about a mile to the beach to go visit her mother. As I was just getting to the end of the road three cyclists asked me how far I  had come from. When I  told them I  was just now completing  my  ride across the country  they volunteered  to help get me and my bicycle  to the water for pictures. I had a yummy coffee then enjoyed walking on the boardwalk. I locked my bike and walked along the waters edge for quite a ways. It was nice to feel the waves crash against  my legs.
