Day 45 Cumberland, Md to North Mountain hiker biker campsite

 Day 45 Cumberland, Md to North Mountain  hiker biker campsite on the C&O Towpath. 76 miles. I left the Ramada  Inn after a hardy breakfast. The Chesapeake/Ohio Towpath is not nearly well  maintained  as the Great Allegany Passage. The  first 15 miles were really muddy and rough to ride. The Paw Paw tunnel is closed to through bicycles, so you have to take a 1 1/2 mile steep  trail to get around  it. It was a hard trail to to get over with all my weight.  I did meet a lady at the top of the trail that was hiking 700 miles. She was doing the 11 scenic  trails. More downhill to Hancock  Md where I had a amazing  fried chicken  Sandwich at Buddylous. Looking  at the radar  I  thought the rain was going to miss me. I was wrong as it poured the last 13 miles to my campsite, North Mountain on the C&O towpath. The hiker/biker campsites  are all free and there is one every 5-10 miles along  the Towpath. There is a well and a Porta potty at each campsite. You have to boil or filter the well water. I am the only one here tonight.

    Each night we talk about your adventure for the day. Love the pictures, such a beautiful country so many people never see. Safe and dry wishes for the next leg of the trip. The East Coast has sure had there days of rain this year!

 Day 50 Harbeson, De to Rehoboth Beach, De 17 miles. My morning started out with a great breakfast from my Warmshower  host Brad. His wife Ann wanted to lead me on the trails to Rehoboth Beach. She was good  company along the ride. A lot of people  on the trail greeted her by name.  Ann pointed out the back yard of skeletons . It reminded  me of a similar  scene  in Gillette, Wy. She broke off about a mile to the beach to go visit her mother. As I was just getting to the end of the road three cyclists asked me how far I  had come from. When I  told them I  was just now completing  my  ride across the country  they volunteered  to help get me and my bicycle  to the water for pictures. I had a yummy coffee then enjoyed walking on the boardwalk. I locked my bike and walked along the waters edge for quite a ways. It was nice to feel the waves crash against  my legs.  After riding 3650 miles, climbed 116,886 vertical  feet, and went from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. It is with heavy heart that this is my last post for my bicycle  ride across America. I had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful interesting people along the way. Big and little acts of kindness that lifted my spirits. Kim and his wife that offered  me shelter and food on a rainy  day in Port Angeles. The closed bicycle  shop in Okanagan, Wa that opened  on a Saturday  morning  to replace my seat post. The Lutheran church in Havillah, Wa that provided  me shelter and food. The people at the top of Boulder Pass  that give me water when I needed it. Rodney in Lolo, Mt that shared his apple crisp. The family  that gave me and my  bicycle  a ride to Gillette, wy when my rear wheel failed.  Day 46 North Mountain to Indian Flats hiker biker campsite,  76 miles. It rained all night. I layed in the tent until about 6:30 when the  rain stopped. I have a horrible  time with tear down  and cooking breakfast, takes to long. I rolled out around 8:30 with everything  wet. Much  dryer  day and the Towpath  was much better maintained. I stopped in  Williamsport for lunch supplies  and a yummy mocha. Talked to several  people along the Towpath about my adventure. I'm  so proud  I  love to share. Staying at a beautiful  hiker biker campsite  tonight  called  Indian Flats. Great views of the river. and I'm  the only one here.
